Old School, Old Folks

Circa 1910 Manila
when nationalism
was the order of the day,
when the collaborators were more patriotic
then the true ones
who were hanged,
when the patriots still talks
in fiery Castillian tongue
to spite the Americans,
when the city was inside the walls,
and the Yanquis
were trying to build a new one
outside the walls,
and teach their brand of democracy
when 1910 is still in the 2010's
and then destroy it during the world war.
as they tried to bastardize our language
in a new "Taglish style"


Well i know they will not succeed,
i laugh and i smile
as i see my old folks
in their granduer
of the old
as i am am old now
reliving the splendor of Manila
in a far away land,
in the community of
more than 5 million Filipino Americans.
